Overview

Restoran Choong Huat 松發潮州海鲜火锅 stands as a timeless beacon for steamboat lovers in Kuala Lumpur, nestled at 22-23, Block P/E, Taman Cheras. This classic seafood hot pot destination offers a unique culinary experience, rooted in tradition yet vibrant with variety. The defining feature here is their signature spicy hot pot, complemented by a rich selection of fresh ingredients and nostalgic flavors honed over many years.

The concept revolves around communal dining, centered on a traditional steamboat pot with a hollow center, creating a gentle yet effective way to cook ingredients evenly. This authentic setup, paired with a diverse soup base selection like salted vegetable or tangy tomato, invites diners to savor every bite slowly—an ideal setting for catching up with friends or celebrating special occasions, especially during the cooler monsoon months.

Highlights include the oyster pancake, a crispy yet richly indulgent appetizer, favored despite its pleasantly greasy texture. Another must-try is the grilled fish, offering a smoky aroma that welcomes guests and consistently delivers in flavor and freshness. Their Golden Egg Steamed Rice Roll and sate ayam add a local touch, balancing the meal with different textures and tastes. The chili sauce served alongside elevates each bite, frequently praised as the best dipping companion, adding layers of complexity to the straightforward ingredients.

While the seating area might not dazzle with luxury, the open-air section is a charming spot on fair-weather days, allowing diners to enjoy the gentle breeze and outdoor atmosphere. The venue caters primarily to groups and families seeking an unpretentious yet fulfilling steamboat experience—where the emphasis is on hearty food and leisurely enjoyment rather than fast-paced service.

Service is patient and measured, encouraging a relaxed dining rhythm that complements the nature of hot pot cooking. Patrons should prepare for a slower pace, which ultimately allows time to savor both the food and company. The pricing aligns well with portion sizes and the quality on offer, making it a sensible choice for those craving reliable, traditional flavors without pretense.

Restoran Choong Huat’s enduring popularity speaks to its successful blend of authenticity, fresh ingredients, and convivial atmosphere. It remains a beloved spot for locals, especially those who appreciate classic steamboat fare enhanced with regional specialties—a true culinary gem in the heart of Taman Cheras.

The food selection is quite extensive, especially if you're into steamboat. We were looking for light snacks, and, surprisingly, they had some a la carte items on the menu. The oyster pancake in particular was a greasy but yummy affair. The service could be quite slow, so be patient and enjoy your drink first. Prices are fair as well, and do sit outside if the weather is fine.

We had the shared bowl of tom yum and chicken soup. The 3 person platter was just enough for 3 person. Average size. Not much meat. We add on wanton and fuchuk. Satay taste ok but not sizzling hot when presented to us. The portuguese style fish okok only. The chili sauce for dipping was the best. Overall is ok. We had been here many times. This place is better than many other places.

Since Today The Rain Have Stop Early And It's The Best Time To Enjoy Chinese Hotpot (Steamboat) . Nice, Clean And Pleasent Environment . Overall - 8/10. For The Hotpot Soup Base, We Have Order The Salted Vege And Tomato Soup (咸菜豆腐汤味). Than We Order 1 Normal Basic Hotpot Set (1 pax). Than We Can Only Order The Additional Add On Dish Of Your Favourite . The Compulsory Normal Basic Hotpot Set Seem To Be Okay And The Price For The Additional Add On Dish Is Consider Average . This place has been open for as long as I can remember. And still going strong with the amount of tables and patrons. Maybe the first time we visited was maybe 10-15 years ago. The steamboat pot used is still the authentic one with a hole in the middle, which makes this place unique from other steamboat places. Soup taste wise is better than most, with plus points for nostalgia taste for original steamboat tastes (compared to the mah la steamboat). The ingredients wise, which are thrown into the steamboat, meats and veggies are fresh. Presentation is good to warrant some food pics for social media. We smelled grilled fish when we arrived and ordered one to try, didn't disappoint and highly recommended. Overall we enjoyed our dinner and had some fun talking points of the history of this place, our visits over the years.
